Division Chair, Humanities

The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Humanities Division of the School of Arts and Sciences.

The Division of Humanities offers bachelor’s programs in BAAS, communication, English, and history, and has a robust master’s program in interdisciplinary studies. It also anticipates launching a master’s program in publishing in fall 2008. In addition, the division offers coursework in non-profit leadership and Spanish, and is seeking to enrich its programmatic offerings in these areas as well as others. The humanities division has over 300 majors, ten full-time faculty, and is home to the Society for Critical Exchange as well as two internationally distributed journals: American Book Review (http://americanbookreview.org) and symploke (www.symploke.org).

UHV is an upper division, graduate institution of nearly 3,000 students and is one of four institutions of the University of Houston System. The newly established Humanities Division Chair serves students on campuses in Victoria, Sugar Land, and Katy, Texas as well as online. The new chair will play a leading role in defining the future of both our Humanities division and the rapidly growing School of Arts and Sciences.

Division chairs are full time (10 1/2 month), tenure-track faculty positions that report to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Rank and salary are dependent upon experience, and the successful candidate should be eligible for tenure decision within three years of the initial appointment. Division chairs are given some release time from regular classroom teaching to allow them time to manage their division in addition to the equivalent of one summer course pay for summer duties and an annual stipend. The division chair is responsible for the overall supervision of the division, which includes: design, development, implementation and assessment of curriculum and programs; mentoring and evaluation of division faculty; running division meetings; planning and budgeting with the dean and the other division chairs.

The successful candidate will have the experience, leadership skills, and motivation to lead this division in its efforts to enhance its curriculum, increase student enrollment and retention, and improve research and programmatic funding support.

Required qualifications: an earned doctorate in humanities or in a humanities-related field; a record of teaching, research, and service warranting appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor; demonstrated planning and organizational skills; experience in mentoring junior faculty; commitment to shared governance and diversity; effective communication and leadership skills; and ability to develop and deliver innovative programs.

Preferred Qualifications: Interdisciplinary studies background; familiarity with fundraising and grants including funded research; experience with distance education, technology and online teaching; familiarity with editing and university/small press publishing; ability to effectively represent the Humanities Division with internal and external groups.

Tenure-track position: accounting,
management, and marketing

The University of Houston-Victoria School of Business Administration invites applications for four tenure track faculty positions starting fall 2008. Rank is at the level of Assistant Professor. The UHV School of Business Administration is accredited by AACSB International and serves over 1,000 students, including 740 graduate business students. The School has been cited for the high level of integration of its MBA curriculum, as well as the excellence of its online and distance education delivery practices.

The desired candidates will have a doctorate in the relevant field from a school accredited by AACSB International. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate: (1) excellence in teaching; (2) a record of publishing in quality journals; and (3) effective communication skills. Corporate experience and experience with Internet-based learning (WebCT) are also preferred.

Teaching loads are normally nine hours per semester. The School of Business Administration is considered a national leader in online delivery and offers substantial technical support for development and delivery of online courses. Salary, benefits and support services are AACSB International peer competitive.

The position openings include:

Accounting: Demonstrate an interest and ability to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate accounting courses, except for tax-related courses.
Management: Demonstrate an interest and ability to teach Organizational Behavior and at least one or more of the following areas: Leadership & Organizational Change, International Management and/or Strategic Management.
Marketing: Demonstrate an interest and ability to teach Marketing Research or Consumer Behavior plus International Marketing and Marketing Strategy.

Adjunct Instructors (Part-Time faculty)

The University of Houston-Victoria School of Arts and Sciences is accepting applications for adjunct instructors in English to teach courses in professional writing (ENG 3430). Courses are offered online and “in-class” at the Sugar Land and Katy, Texas campuses.
